Michael Jung is a mild-mannered freelance writer-for-hire, actor, and professional storyteller with a keen interest in pop culture, education, nonprofit organizations, and unusual side hustles. Next: Spider-Man’s Powers Make Him Look Weaker as Peter Parker Nevertheless, it’s a lighthearted take on the Clone Saga and one some fans would have probably preferred to the longer storyline. While this shorter version appears to end happily, one wonders how the two versions of Spider-Man would handle the logistics of their new living arrangement (clone Peter is noticeably younger than the original Peter and doesn’t have the memories or experiences of the last three years). The clone happily agrees (although Peter quickly tries to take advantage of the situation by giving the clone the couch while he takes the bed). However, Peter-seeing how well they work together-asks him to stay so they can have a real double identity, with both sharing the role of Spider-Man and allowing each other to enjoy a more active social life as Peter Parker. In the aftermath, the clone decides to leave town and change his name. The original Peter resumes his identity as Spider-Man while the clone continues masquerading as Peter, helping Spidey ambush Kingpin’s goons and even taking photos of the whole thing. Thankfully, Peter is willing to listen to his clone, who tells him that they need to stop the Kingpin-together. Unsure of what to do, but realizing he can’t keep the real Peter Parker a prisoner, the clone frees his double from the suspended animation pod and revives him. Regardless, the clone decides to investigate the mystery behind his amnesia-and discovers, to his horror, that he is the clone of Peter Parker. This version, which ran in What If -? #30 by Bill Flanagan, Rich Buckler, Jim Mooney, and Pablo Marcos, showed an alternate universe where Peter’s clone chose a very different path.

Oddly enough, while most people felt The Clone Sagalasted too long, Marvel had originally created a different version of the saga which lasted only a single issue. Related: The Deadliest Spider-Man is Spider-Woman’s Son Ben disintegrated (although later stories would bring him back) and many readers felt the storyline was an unnecessary convoluted mess. However, he later died saving Peter from the Green Goblin, who turned out to be the true mastermind behind the clone identity crisis. The story saw the return of Ben Reilly, a clone created from Peter Parker’s DNA back in The Amazing Spider-Man #149, and it quickly cast doubt on which of the two men was the real Spider-Man.Īt one point, Ben believed he was the original Peter Parker and took over as Spider-Man.
